My Poor Baby

Our first broken bone occurred in the month of June- the first real week of summer vacation too! I had 2 extras and we all went to the park to enjoy the sun. We have found a few new parks this summer and Sam Peach in downtown Puyallup is a new favorite. This park has a paved walking trail with an open soccer field or ball diamond in the middle. It is great for walking while watching the kiddos either on the field or the playground at the same time- a win win situation for sure! The Imbers met up with us and we had a great day of playing kickball, baseball, ate a picnic lunch, the kids were total monkeys on the play structure and just as we were leaving Haley asked if she could ride a scooter. I was literally putting away all of the blankets, coolers, balls etc. and said, " yes, for a second while I clean up and that's it." I have this thing against scooters to start with, and we didn't have any helmets etc. etc. with us. What could happen in 5 minutes right?
Well, she was doing great then all of a sudden went air born. I think that her shoelace got caught in the wheel of the scooter and it sent her flying. She landed on her head, nose and arm - not sure of the order but hit those places the hardest. Poor thing! She was really good while I tried to talk with her, and I decided that park time was over! We took home her friends ( whose dad just happens to be an Army pediatrician) and he took a look at it. He didn't like how her arm was sitting so I took her to our local doctor's emergency clinic up the road. They took one look at her and sent us to the emergency room. I didn't understand why they couldn't x-ray and set it right then and there so the doctor, a mom herself and expecting another one at any moment, told me the following. "Sometimes bones break and they are a clean break and we just line it up and set it. Sometimes bones don't break cleanly, and there is some manipulation that needs to occur and sometimes that calls for sedatives and you really want the ortho guy to do that since he's the expert. I'll call the ER and let them know you're coming."
I really appreciated that she tried to use big words so that the girls didn't catch on... but they all knew something was up. I was secretly hoping that there would be a group sedative because I could really had used one at this point.
We went to the ER calling Scott to check in on the way. He was working a ship and was going up on deck every 15 minutes for an update. He kept offering to come but I had it under control so we did the updates to keep him in the loop. The nurses and doctor were so great- I got a lecture from about 10 different people about helmets and I agreed with each of them 100%. It turned out that Haley had a green tree fracture or bending fracture of both bones in her right arm, a concussion, and had such serious road rash on her face that her nose had to be glued back together in one place. She was such a trouper! She didn't cry when they pushed on her arm, cleaned out her cut knee or head OR even when they had to open up and scrub her nose! I about jumped on the nurse while my Haley's eyes just filled up with tears- she didn't move an inch! So brave!
Finally, we got our x-rays back, a Popsicle from one of the nurses , some glue, and finally a splint and were sent on our way. We had been there for hours and had missed dinner so I asked Haley what sounded good. She wanted KFC and" the greasy kind mom, not the good for you kind of chicken". So we drove through KFC and got some of the greasiest chicken we could find and it was gone before we made it home. We spent the night waking her every hour to check on her (due to the concussion), she slept in our room on the futon and her sister's wanted to sleep with her. I told them they couldn't and they asked if they could just sleep by her on the floor- so cute- so I let them. Once Scott came home around 2:00am the family sleepover was complete- we were all there sleeping or attempting to together. The next day we saw the orthopedic doctor and got a top of the line tie-dye, waterproof cast! Here are pictures of the first night and the second. Oh what a difference a day makes! She'll have to have the cast for 4 weeks, but since we will be in Missouri visiting my parents, she gets to wear it for 6 weeks.

What a big girl! I can't believe she was so brave! (And I can't believe what a brave mommy you are to do it all by yourself!) Hope she's feeling better!
