The last Fun Fling of Summer

Friday morning we woke up late and decided that a day of celebration was in order. Sunday is Scott's last day at Rainierview Christian Church and so his last work week was over. The kids will be starting school this coming week and we thought that some family bonding needed to take place! So Scott gave me a list of options that might be fun.. and of course I picked my happy place- the beach! Here is Scott walking on the beach at West Haven State Park near Westport.
This was a new beach to us and as most of you know, I am kind of a beach snob. We have been to Ocean Shores a couple of times and it was the beach, so of course it was fun... but not like the beaches of Oregon that we have been used to... that is until we discovered New Haven State Park! We just went here on kind of a whim and it was great! The parking lot was super close, had real bathrooms and even an outdoor shower! They also had an indoor shower in one of the bathrooms I think. Here we are starting our quick trek to the shore.

One of the coolest things at this beach was the amount of treasures we found! We collected 2 buckets full of perfect sand dollars! The girls loved discovering them, digging them, then saying "look at this one!" when placing them in the bucket.

Haley and I hit the beach searching for treasures. We pretty much had the beach all to ourselves except for a few surfers. It was fun to watch them! We saw a huge boat go out to sea and heard a fog horn for a lot of our visit!

A trip to the beach is not complete without flying a kite! The weather was great- in the 60's, overcast, but not too windy or rainy. Hopie thought that she was such a hot shot flying the kite all by herself! They made it go as high as it could! I'm just glad that there weren't any strong gusts to make her go flying!

Here's Haley and Scott flying the kite. It was a bit windy at this point so it was hard for me to keep the camera still while on super zoom so it's a bit out of focus. Notice how it looks like she is wearing gloves? It's sand! This kid is the total opposite of her father in that she is the grit Queen! Scott's not a big fan of sand all over him.... obviously Haley is more like her mom here and could care less! :) This kid really "experiences" the beach!

Hannah and Scott were the first to get the kite going. Notice the surfer behind them! Brrrrrr!

Hopie loved playing in the sand. Her hair would blow in her face then she would push it away not realizing when she did so that she was getting sand all over her face. This happened quite a bit until she kind of got the hang of just turning her head into the wind for appropriate hair replacement.

Silly Haley making a sand castle.

Before we left the beach we had to make a fort. There were a few forts already made but the surfers were using them as changing rooms and they were kind of close to other people... so we made our own. Here Hannah is flashing the I love you sign while in her new fort.

After a dinner of clam chowder and fish and chips... we went down to the docks. Our waitress told us that there were baby sea lions down there so we went to catch a peek!

We saw some big sea lions but no babies. We also saw tons of really cool fishing boats. This was a great last adventure as we close down summer and start all of the new beginnings of fall!
